INSTANT MESSAGING SERVICE POLICY

Background
It is the intent of the Farmington Public Library to provide free, equitable, and organized public access to Instant Messaging (IM), through which users may communicate with library staff via the Library’s Web page, or through Internet-based messaging services. Access to Instant Messaging honors the fundamental library principle of intellectual freedom, and abiding respect for the dignity of individual inquiry.

Who May Use Just Ask Instant Messaging?
Anyone with a supported IM account or access to our Web page may use this service, but those who choose to visit the library in person will be given priority.

Types of Questions
Instant Messaging is intended to answer brief questions. For more involved queries, Instant Messaging users may be referred to another appropriate source. Library staff may also recommend that a user come into the library for more in-depth research questions or to utilize print resources available only at the library.  Although library staff may assist with access to legal, medical, or tax information, recommendations or advice will not be provided.

Rules of Conduct
Farmington Public Library reserves the right to refuse to answer questions that are deemed offensive and/or inappropriate, in accordance with the library’s Computer Rules, as well as Acceptable Behavior and Internet Use policies. If a user does not adhere to these policies, the Instant Messaging session will be stopped and access blocked.

Patron Privacy
Farmington Public Library supports every individual’s right to have his/her library records remain confidential. However, by choosing use the Library’s Instant Messaging Service, individuals forfeit their right to privacy. Online communication with the Library is subject to scrutiny by library staff and/or law enforcement agencies. 

Response to Queries
The Library strives to maximize coverage and maintain consistency with its Instant Messaging Service. During peak usage and after hours, an automated response will be transmitted to queued patrons with the goal of responding as quickly as possible.
