Happy Chinese New Year
February 10 marks the first day of the Chinese New Year, one of the most important traditional Chinese holidays. It is a time of celebration because it is considered to be the end of winter and the beginning of spring. In fact, in China the holiday is sometimes called the Spring Festival.
The celebration of Chinese New Year lasts fifteen days. People take time off of their everyday lives to watch parades and fireworks, dance, play games, and feast on special New Year's food. Everyone hopes for good luck in the new year.
The Chinese calendar has a twelve-year cycle, and each year is ruled by an animal from the Chinese zodiac. This year, 2013, is the year of the snake. People born in a year with this sign are believed to be wise, quiet and charming.
To learn more about the Chinese New Year, come check out the library's non-fiction collection, or take a look at the CultureGrams database available through the library's website.

Dads, brothers, big brothers welcome!
"Our mission is to motivate boys to read by connecting them with materials they will want to read, in ways they like to read."
The Youth Services department at the Farmington Public Library has started a GUYS READ Field Office. GUYS READ is a web based literacy program founded by Jon Scieszka to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers. Our charter will meet using GUYS READ recommended books. Each week, we will add our own reviews and lists while exploring books you like to read!
GUYS READ takes several initiatives to motivate guys to read. What boys like to read is not often the same as what they are required to read. Literacy fiction is the mainstay of required school reading. Yet boys often prefer non-fiction, humor, information, comics/graphic novels, and more humor. Mayor Tommy Roberts will stop by for a visit in February!
The program will be organized and facilitated by Byron Tsabetsaye, a Youth Services Technician at the Farmington Public Library and an AmeriCorps Alumnus.
