Reel Readers

From September through December, the library is pleased to host our popular book/movie discussion series for adults, called Reel Readers.

September’s offering is A River Runs Through It by Norman McLean. Just as the author writes that he is "haunted by waters," so have readers been haunted by his novella. The two novellas and short story in this collection are based on his own experiences, foremost being that life is only a step from art in its structures and beauty. The stories concern themselves with the complexities of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, and being a husband, a son, and a father.

A River Runs Through It is a 1992 American film directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer, Tom Skerritt, Brenda Blethyn, and Emily Lloyd. Set in and around the city of Missoula in western Montana, the story follows two sons of a Presbyterian minister—one studious and the other rebellious—as they grow up and come of age in a time that roughly spans the Prohibition era in the United States: from World War I to the early days of the Great Depression.

How Reel Readers Works:

  1. Read the book, if you have time. Each month, prior to the movie showing, copies of the selected title will be available in the library’s rotunda.
  2. Join us for the movie even if you haven’t read the book. Bring your own carry-out dinner to enjoy while you watch the movie.
  3. Talk about the book and film. Following the movie, you are invited to participate in a guided discussion.
  4. You might win fabulous prizes when you attend Reel Reader events!

"Dinner and a Movie" for A River Runs Through It will be held on Monday, September 20 at 6:00pm.

For more information about Reel Readers or any other adult services programs, please visit the reference desk or call 599-1270.

YOU’VE WATERED YOUR MIND…

Digital Photography Workshop

The goal of the Photography Workshop is to show you how to take better pictures using the equipment you already own. The results could be photographers who take such good pictures that "oohs and wows" are heard whenever others see them. Since this is a Workshop, we will be taking pictures using newly acquired skills, then showing and critiquing them in a positive way. Bring your own digital camera.
