Tom and Bev Taylor
The Story Time Room doors are unique to our library. They were hand-made by former Farmington mayor Tom Taylor, who did the carving, and his wife, Bev, who did the calligraphy. They spent 400 hours on the doors and donated them to the library.
When the doors are closed they form an open storybook. When the doors are open, the storybook closes.
Note the minute detail in the carving. For example, the dragon sits on a mushroom and reads a book entitled “Human Tales.” Beneath the dragon, a whimsical insect reads a book entitled “The Art of Reading with Compound Eyes.” In the upper right, Tom has carved his own face in the sun. At the bottom left is Rapunzel’s Castle. Beneath the castle is a secret cave. Inside the cave is a tiny treasure chest. The front of the storybook shows that the title is “Dreams, Dragons, Bugs and Books.” Note the intricately carved Celtic handle. On the back cover of the storybook, Bev’s face is carved into the moon. Rhinestone constellations are a tribute to Bev’s father, an amateur astronomer.
In hand-lettered calligraphy, Bev has finished the doors with the first and last lines from several favorite children’s stories and poems.
