Mr. Brightside

by Chet Miller

As one year ends, a new one begins. There is never a void, a time where we are without a year. To become even more finite, there is always a day we are in, an hour, a minute, a second, on down the division of time. Yet it seems that the changing of a year is the most important time for us. This makes sense. A year is a long enough chunk of time to seem meaningful, but not nearly as infrequent as millennia, or even decades. So let us look at this year up ahead.

Let’s make some predictions about 2008.

1.         Someone important will die. (Probably more than one.)

2.         Most movies are going to suck. (Especially any sequel done by Disney.)

3.         There will be a new president. Most of the nation will be unhappy with him (or her)

4.         The Cubs will not win the World Series.

5.         I will one night be at my desk, muttering profanity about the state of the world. It won't change anything.

Sounds really pessimistic, doesn’t it? That is the problem we now face with the world. We always look to the negative. The number one priority this year should be to look to the bright side. When someone dies, we should grieve them. But we should also remember the great things they had done, and all that they have taught us. Instead of hating a poorly written movie, look to the good inside it and enjoy that aspect. Be glad that we have a president, instead of a dictator. If you’re a Cubs fan, I am sorry but at least you tried. Look to this year as a good thing, and treat others the way you want to be treated. Hopefully this will make things a little bit better.
