Chesterville

by Jonathan Bacon

As the young man walked through the busy streets of Chesterville, he noticed a sign which read “Do ___ Enter.” Being new to the big city, our young friend did not know that the word “not” had been scratched off of the sign; thus, he entered.

A week later, he found himself in a large, round, rubber room which was dimly lit. The floor he sat on was like one huge mattress. On the other side of the room, was a yellow wooden door with a small peep-hole. The young man slowly got up and walked to the peep-hole to see what was on the other side. Through the hole, he saw a multi-pastel colored house with a garden of roses surrounding it. He also saw a tall glass of pink lemonade. After seeing this strange sight, he thought he should investigate. When he moved to open the door, he noticed that he was in a straight jacket.

“That’s odd,” he mumbled to himself, after which he asked, “Why am I mumbling?”

Then, he decided to sit and ponder this for a few months.

On the other side of his room, two men in white coats were looking in at him through the small peep-hole.

“He’s still hallucinating,” commented one of them, after taking a drink of his pink lemonade.

“After being used as a test subject for that new drug on the street, I’m surprised that’s the only symptom,” replied the other.

“Well, I guess we’ll keep him for another week then. You ready to go to lunch?
