Miss New Mexico & Miss Indian Farmington
“Prevention of Underage Drinking” Platform
The youth in San Juan County are taking a stand for the prevention of underage drinking with help from Miss New Mexico Christina Olmi and Miss Indian Farmington, Jerae Curtis. Thirty Youth in Action team members and the New Mexico celebrities placed 1,575 stickers on alcoholic beverages at Dino’s Mart location. The stickers tell that providing alcohol to minors is illegal and a 4th degree felony, 18-months in jail and $3,000 fine. The Teen Zone sponsored a recruitment BBQ party after the event at the library.
Christina Olmi will represent Miss New Mexico in the January 2009 pageant that will be telecast live – the Teen Zone will show this event! Her platform is on DWIs and Mothers Against Drunk Driving and is currently raising awareness of the aftermath of drunk driving. She hopes to sing Jordin Sparks’ “This is My Now” at the Miss American pageant because it relates to her feeling about her platform. Miss New Mexico stressed “MADD is there the whole time.”
Youth in Action is based out of the Farmington Public Library and works in the community in numerous public events to prevent underage drinking. Adult volunteers are provided by San Juan County Partnership.
MADD Youth in Action meets at 7pm with the Mayor's Teen Advisory Council on the 1st Thursday of the month at the Farmington Public Library to organize projects in the community. Snacks are provided and remember to bring a friend!

MADD NMYouth in Action is a MADD program designed to reduce underage drinking by targeting social and retail availability of alcohol for youth under the age of 21 and by supporting the enforcement of underage drinking laws. YIA partners youth with law enforcement, educates adults in the community, and targets alcohol sales to minors. By reducing the access of alcohol to minors, this program aims to reduce the amount of youth engaging in underage drinking.
The mission of Youth In Action is to reduce the social and retail availability of alcohol to minors and support enforcement of underage drinking laws.
YIA is important because alcohol is the number one drug of choice for American youth and kills more youth than all other illicit drugs combined.
The goal of YIA is to reduce youth access to alcohol by increasing awareness and enforcement of alcohol laws for alcohol retailers and community members.
