Look at what Youth in Action does in San Juan County!Roll Call Briefing
YIA team members created a presentation for law enforcement to show support for enforcing underage drinking laws. A Roll Call Briefing fosters a strong relationship between police officers and youth. Police officers are too often met with hostility when attempting to enforce the 21 minimum drinking age law. They gave a presentation on underage drinking and Youth in Action to 30 Sheriff's Deputies at the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. They encouraged them to support Zero Tolerance laws in our community and deputies gave input as to how Youth in Action could best support them in their work.
Compliance Check
Four underage youth worked as decoys with undercover police officers to make sure retailers didn't sell alcohol to minors and penalize those who did. Members of the Youth in Action team were given training by the Special Investigations Division to conduct Compliance Checks at liquor establishments in the San Juan County area. They visited locations in Bloomfield, Aztec, and Blanco, and reported 90% compliance.
Alcohol Purchase and Shoulder Tap Surveys
In an Alcohol Purchase survey, young-looking 21 year olds survey retailers to find out if clerks are properly checking for identification on alcohol sales. This project is designed to survey several retailers in the community. In a Shoulder Tap survey, youth with supervision educate adults about the dangers and consequences of providing alcohol to minors.
